One of the most obvious reasons we recommend samples taken directly from
the surface is illustrated above. It is apparent that along this 25 feet of
exposed soil profile the dark "A" horizon varies from 12 in. to almost 4 feet
with absolutely no indication from the surface. Any tool that requires or
suggests taking samples at some arbitrary depth in the soil is either unaware of
the variability of the soil or they are hoping it does not matter. My research
indicates that a failure to understand the structure and chemical variability of
the soils with depth is a huge mistake.
